Chapter Three

Chapter 3
Choosing Your Own Life
• You have a lot of control over your life as an artist
• The first and best thing is to clarify for yourself what you really want as an artist
• Your greatest threat is the voice in your own mind telling you that you cannot succeed
• Don’t ask “Can I do this?” ask “How can I do this?”
• When an artist decides to turn their attention to business, the results can be astounding
• Creativity applied in any arena transcends whatever apparent limitations there are
• In order to enter the business world you will need to learn how it functions
• Guidelines for entering the business world:
o Make the art first, then find the market for it
o Don’t try to second-guess the market
o Accessing your art in terms of the marketplace
o Making strategic choices
I think that if you have the right attitude and the right motivation you could easily succeed in this type of business. You do need to be a bit forward about your art. You can’t just wait for an opportunity to come, you have to go find it.
I found a really interesting lecture given to art students, dealing with what this chapter talks about..
